Workshop: Learning Design For Behavior Change (October 2025)

Okay folks — I’m only doing this workshop publicly once this year. It will be a virtual workshop on October 9th, 16th and 23rd (2025) with my friends at LDA, and it’s one of my favorite things to do. If you haven’t already taken it, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite activities from the workshop.

Really Define the Behavior

Instead of fuzzy goals like โ€œbuild a safety culture,โ€ participants will practice writing outcomes and behaviors so clear you could capture them in a photo. This exercise sharpens your ability to spot measurable, observable actions that drive change

Collage of workshop slides with the heading โ€œReally define the target behavior!โ€. One slide shows examples like โ€œWe need to create a safety cultureโ€ and โ€œStaff should be more customer-focused.โ€ Another shows the โ€œphoto testโ€ question: โ€œIf I took a photo or video of the behavior, what would I see?โ€. Emphasis is on making behaviors concrete and observable.

Mapping Your Learners Motivation

Using a case study (like freelance writers saving for retirement), youโ€™ll highlight all the reasons people might โ€” or might not โ€” adopt a behavior, and then connect them to autonomy, competence, and relatedness from self-determination theory

Workshop slide collage with the heading โ€œAnalyze your learnersโ€™ motivation!โ€. Includes a diagram of Self-Determination Theory from โ€œAmotivatedโ€ to โ€œIntrinsic,โ€ a worksheet for plotting motivators/demotivators, and an example scenario with a woman and text about workplace motivators.

Figure Out Where Are They in the Change Process

Not everyone is starting at the same place. In this activity, youโ€™ll place learners on a 10-step readiness continuum โ€” from โ€œdoesnโ€™t know the behavior existsโ€ to โ€œstruggling to maintain itโ€. Is it a knowledge problem, or is it more about motivation and support?

Design Effective Interventions

Youโ€™ll learn to dissect a behavior using the COM-B model: Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation. This reveals hidden barriers and points to practical interventions, which you can use to design effective solutions.
